A Thanksgiving Message from Buckelew Programs

 

It’s easy to get caught up in the daily rush of work, errands, bills, childcare, and chores. When we’re not busy “doing,” we’re busy scrolling through social media, videos, and news. Sometimes we need a holiday like Thanksgiving to stop, breathe and reflect on our own gratitude. 

For me, it’s the amazing people devoted to Buckelew’s vision. The talented staff, hardworking clients, heartful volunteers, generous donors, and dedicated Board of Directors. They inspire me every single day. I’m grateful for how they fortify the Buckelew mission and embrace opportunities to deepen our work in 2022. Opportunities such as:

  • Participating in the national launch of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Our counselors are answering approximately 1,000 crisis calls each month!
  • Helping lead the new inRESPONSE mental health emergency team in Santa Rosa. The team responded to roughly 500 service calls in the first quarter alone!
  • Bringing Athena House under our umbrella after the vital women’s substance use recovery treatment and sober-living housing programs faced closure. (See below for details about exciting renovations underway.)

Those are just a few of many meaningful initiatives this year. I look forward to sharing more in our upcoming annual Impact Report next month. Meanwhile, I hope it’s enough to say that I couldn’t be more thankful for you and this heart-centered community.

We Are Thankful For…

Our Staff

You won’t meet a more dedicated and compassionate provider than Eugene Hay, a certified substance use counselor at the Helen Vine Recovery Center. Eugene’s 50-year-career as a peer provider started with a court-ordered rehab stint when he was just a teen. Today, he plays a crucial role in Buckelew’s treatment and recovery programs, offering invaluable guidance by sharing his lived experience. “The most important lesson I teach is about love,” Eugene tells us. “I encourage them to learn to ‘love thyself’ so they can make better choices and love others.” 

Our Clients

We’re not only grateful – we’re inspired by our hardworking clients and their families, who put their trust in Buckelew Programs to steward their journey toward recovery. Clients like Joanna, who passed in and out of hospitals and recovery programs for years before coming to Casa Rene, Buckelew’s short-term crisis residential center. Her mom, Amy, tells us Joanna’s struggles took a critical toll on her health and Amy feared for her daughter’s life. But Casa Rene was a turning point. Today, Joanna is progressing in her recovery and was recently certified to become a peer counselor. Because of Buckelew, says Amy, “My daughter is going to be fine.”

 

Our Partners

We could not do this critical work without our community partners. Partners like the grassroots coalition of advocates and alumnae who rallied and fundraised to save Athena House from closure by their private operator in Sonoma County. As part of that successful campaign, Buckelew will continue to support the crucial residential treatment and sober living environments for women and their children. Extra special thanks to angel donors Bill and Cindy Gallaher of Poppy Bank, who recognized the value of these services! Sonoma County experienced a 92% spike in opioid-related deaths between 2019 and 2021 and has the Bay Area’s second-highest rate of overdoses, yet few dedicated residential programs for women’s recovery.

Renovation update: There’s been so much progress bringing Athena House and Hope Village together on the Santa Rosa campus! (Athena House was previously at another location.) Crews funded by the Gallaher's are nearly done remodeling existing buildings to host Athena House’s recovery treatment clients, including adding a bright and airy community room. Once complete, Buckelew will submit an application for licensing and certification. Meanwhile, the demolition and reconstruction of an aging Hope Village sober-living residence for women and their children is slated to start in December.
