Buckelew: In Brief - March 2023

Athena House Alumnae Reunion

Athena House Update

Athena House renovations are complete! All permits have been filed, and we’re awaiting sign-off from Sonoma County for residential treatment services to resume, likely in summer 2023. Athena House will serve approximately 16 women and up to three children, at any given time, for an intensive engagement between 60-90 days.

From Athena House, the women can move to the sober living environment known as Hope Village, which provides low-cost housing and services for 25 women and up to 7 children.

The reopening is quite a feat!  Less than a year ago, the women’s facility faced immediate closure when its previous operator put the property up for sale. Knowing what a vital program Athena House is for Sonoma County residents, Buckelew quickly stepped up to manage the facility after its relocation and remodel by local philanthropists and community residents, the Gallaher Family.

What makes Athena House truly special and effective is the continuum of care it provides–from intensive treatment to sober living and its robust alumnae and on-campus network that is fundamental for women in recovery, their children and families who receive services. We’re thrilled to be able to continue serving Sonoma County residents with this critical – and now updated! – facility.

San Rafael Supported Housing Refresh!

Thanks to a generous grant from the William G. Irwin Charity Foundation, Buckelew is refurbishing and making significant safety renovations to a Supported Housing residence in San Rafael. The Foundation’s grant covered the cost of new carpeting, windows, paint, flooring and a beautifully remodeled bathroom for the residents. The grant provided a much-needed update to the house that has been home for Buckelew clients for over two decades and offered a huge morale boost to residents and staff! Thank you, William G. Irwin Charity Foundation!

“The kitchen is awesome and the floors are great! Everyone here loves it!” Resident

“Phenomenal job! The house feels new. It has added to the positive culture in the house.” Staff member
