Buckelew in Brief: June 2024

Supporting LGBTQ+ Mental Health During Pride Month

Buckelew and inRESPONSE teams at Sonoma County's Pride Parade on June 1.

As rainbow flags fly high for Pride Month, Buckelew Programs not only honors the LGBTQ+ community's history and resilience. We also recognize the ongoing struggles – stigma, discrimination, misinformation – that can deeply impact a person’s mental health.

For those who feel isolated or marginalized, Pride Month offers a vital boost to mental wellbeing through a sense of community and positive representations in media and public spaces. Feeling truly seen can be a lifeline. Grab it and hold on.

Being an ally for the LGBTQ+ community can make a difference. Two opportunities this month to be an ally for mental health:

  • Join our partners June 25 from 5-8:30 p.m. at a Pride event hosted by Marin County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services at the College of Marin. Learn about existing mental health and substance use services for Marin’s LGBTQ+ community, and attend a planning session focused on closing gaps in care. The event includes refreshments and a drag artist performance. Register to attend. Free.
  • Spread the word: The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has LGBTQ-informed counselors. Three ways to connect: πŸ’¬ Text PRIDE to 988,  πŸ“ž Press 3 when calling 988,  βœ… Select LGBTQ+ in the pre-chat survey at 988lifeline.org.

Sneak Peek! Finishing Touches at Athena House & Hope Village

Take a sneak peek at the nearly completed Athena House and Hope Village in Sonoma County! A place of healing, this revitalized campus is where we provide compassionate substance use treatment and sober housing for nearly 40 women and nonbinary adults, and eight accompanying children at a given time.

The beautiful campus owes its existence to the generosity of local real estate developers Bill and Cindy Gallaher. Back in 2022, when the Gallahers learned Athena House and Hope Village faced homelessness, they purchased this Santa Rosa property, funded new construction and gave our programs and clients a new lease on life.

These programs serve women who often lack the means to access care, putting them at risk of overdose, homelessness, imprisonment and long-term separation from their children. We are deeply grateful for the Gallahers, who lease to the campus to Buckelew for a nominal $1/year.

It takes a village to provide these critical services, and our operating costs are not fully reimbursed. We invite you to join the community of supporters by making a donation to fund essentials such as counselors, case managers, baby formula, diapers, bedding, towels and toiletries.

Look Who’s Biking for Buckelew!

Jacob Swartz, one of Buckelew’s suicide prevention hotline volunteers, tells us he's biking 200 miles from Seattle to Portland on July 13 as a personal fundraiser for Buckelew Programs 😍. We are filled with gratitude! Watch this message from Jacob to learn about his ride from Seattle to Portland and see how you can help him reach his goal.
